Imari ware originated in Arita, Japan in the early 17th century and became highly popular for export to Europe in the late 17th and 18th centuries. Typically decorated with underglaze cobalt and overglaze iron red and gold, Imari pieces range from utilitarian wares to finely painted export porcelain. Western demand inspired many variations and octagonal forms like this were fashionable in both domestic Japanese use and for export during the 19th century.
